NEW CASTLE, Pa. – New Castle artist Paige Hemke Kleinfelder has been selected to participate in the 55th Art of the State 2022 exhibit at The State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.
The competition, which opens Sept. 11 and runs through Jan. 15, showcases established and emerging Pennsylvania artists.
Of the 1,850 works submitted, only 92 were selected by jurors Michele Carlson, Sheila Cuellar-Shaffer and Roland Graf. Among these was Kleinfelder’s “Peninsula Motel,” a block print depicting the landmark sign to the former Peninsula Motel in Erie.
Kleinfelder has been drawn to the memories held within vacant and abandoned structures in the Rust Belt for as long as she can remember.
Her camera and her car have become integral tools to locating her next prospective painting or block print while traveling.
Kleinfelder will offer a block printing workshop for couples at the Hoyt Center in New Castle on July 16, from 6-9 p.m. Click here to register.

Old Fashioned Independence Day at Campus
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – After a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic, Westminster College’s old-fashioned Independence Day celebration returns this year with a free concert and fireworks display beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, at Brittain Lake on the College’s campus.
The annual event — now in its 31st year — will feature music by the River City Brass Band, the only full-time professional brass band in the country, playing a variety of selections, with an emphasis on patriotic music. Former New York Metropolitan Opera singer Susan Toth Shafer, a 1974 Westminster graduate, will be the featured soloist.
The evening will be capped by a fireworks display provided by Pyrotecnico at 9:15 p.m.
The celebration is free to the public, but a free-will offering will be taken.
Attendance in recent years has reached more than 5,000, so early arrival is suggested for this family-oriented event. Free parking is available throughout Westminster’s campus. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating, as well as picnic baskets and refreshments. Food vendors will be on site.
In case of rain, the concert will be held in Anderson Amphitheater.
WNEO Wins Award for Motley Documentary
KENT, Ohio – PBS Western Reserve, which operates TV channels WNEO and WEAO, has won a regional Emmy award in the Documentary Historical category for “Lines Broken: The Story of Marion Motley.”
The documentary also recently won three Telly Awards. It tells of Canton native Marion Motley’s journey as one of four African Americans who broke pro football’s color barrier when he joined the Cleveland Browns. Stark County-based filmmakers James Waters and Shaun Horrigan produced the documentary.
“Lines Broken,” which premiered on PBS Western Reserve in February 2021, is available for free viewing on demand at PBSWesternReserve.org.
‘Immigration and Caricature’ Exhibit at Hoyt
NEW CASTLE, Pa. – The history of immigration and its social impact in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is the topic of Art & Education at the Hoyt’s newest exhibition: “Immigration and Caricature: Ethnic Images from the Appel Collection.” The exhibition opens July 5 and runs through Aug. 25.
Culled from caricatures published in popular publications dating from the Civil War to World War I, the exhibit explores the role of caricature in forming American values and attitudes during a period of massive migration. To modern Americans, the contents are sometimes humorous, sometimes disturbing. Yet to the student, these stereotypes offer a resource for the study of American attitudes and history that still linger in our culture today.
The items consist of a variety of print media such as cartoons, postcards, trade cards and prints and lithographs from Michigan State University Museum’s collection.
A free public reception will take place at noon July 16, followed by a series of gallery talks.
Education Director Robert Presnar will offer a discussion on the relationship between the exhibit and local immigration history and trends on July 21 at 6:30 p.m. Local historian and genealogist Andrew Henley will lead a discussion on the value of researching one’s own heritage on August 11 at 6:30 p.m. While admission to both talks is free, reservations are requested by calling 724 652 2882.
