Phasmophobia Update Adds Custom Difficulty, New Map

Phasmophobia has been a staple in the horror community since releasing in 2020, and the developer continues to put out updates with new ideas.

There are some people who will leap at the chance to play something scary, but there are also those who are a lot more hesitant. Titles like Phasmophobia can potentially be a good horror game even for non-horror players. It is still pretty scary, but its focus is mainly on investigations and team efforts. That's largely what made it so popular in the first place. On top of that, the developer, Kinetic Games, is only too keen to keep pushing out new ideas, with a new patch rolling out soon.

According to the latest "Development Preview" post on Steam, the studio is preparing the next major update for Phasmophobia, and it looks as though this is going to be an interesting one. For one thing, players will soon have the ability to customize each round's difficulty. A number of images on the post give a sneak peek at the menu system, with a number of options available, such as sanity drain speed, spring recharge time, and even the starting sanity. It's also possible to customize what the cursed possession will be, and how many there will be in the map.

Cursed possessions were introduced to Phasmophobia last year, and add a little extra step to each investigation. At the start of each map, one item will spawn in a specific location. This could be the Ouija board, summoning circle, voodoo doll, haunted music box, haunted mirror, or tarot cards. Using the item can give hints as to where the ghost is located, or it has the potential to make a paranormal event occur or even summon the ghost entirely. The only downside is that it's to the detriment of player sanity. Being able to customize this option could really go a long way to making the experience a lot harder, especially for newcomers.

There's also going to be a new level in the next major update, though some may be wondering whether this is a brand-new map entirely or a rework of Phasmophobia's Asylum level. According to the game's Wiki page, it's basically a mixture of both, being described as a rejigging of the Asylum map. However, it will be replacing the current one, so it does sort of mean that it is new.

There hasn't been a new Phasmophobia map since Maple Lodge Campsite, which went live last October just in time for Halloween. In general, it sounds as though the patch is going to be an intriguing one. However, it should be pointed out that the developer does say that this is a "work in progress," so things might change before the update rolls out.

Phasmophobia is available on PC.
